Custom Suits Q&A

Who Needs a Custom Suit?

Just about everyone can benefit from a custom suit. However, there are certain individuals who would benefit the most.
1). A gentleman with a size problem. A person’s height, weight, body build, may constitute a need for a custom garment.
2). An individual who prefers to style or design his own suit.
3). A person who enjoys the opportunity of selecting from a large variety of fabrics.
4). A gentleman that enjoys shopping in the comfort of his office or home. (Suit and shirt fabrics- swatches are very portable.)

What is a Custom Suit?

A true custom suit is a garment that starts with a paper pattern fashioned by hand by a tailor specifically for an individual customer. In addition, true custom suits require a substantial amount of fittings where fabrics are hand cut and basted to carefully fit the individual shape of the customer’s body.

What is a Made-To-Measure-Suit?

Made to Measure garments are made from existing patterns then altered to fit the individual’s needs. Quality Made to Measure patterns are hand cut and then altered to meet varied specifications. Today many Made to Measure suits are cut from a pattern by a computer. Most Made to Measure suits have one or two fittings in the store after the garment has been through the normal manufacturing process.

What are some of the key measurements required to properly produce a quality custom suit? The most critical is the chest and over arm measurements for the coat. In addition, the coat length, and the coat seat are important. Regarding the trousers, the out seam and inseam are key along with the measurements for the waist, seat, knee, and bottom of the leg.

Is it Difficult to Find the Right Fabric?

First decide on how and where you anticipate wearing the garment? For example, will the suit be worn for social events, business, or for traveling? Do you prefer fabrics that can be worn year around? Would you enjoy colors that are proper in the summer as well as in the winter? Also, it is important to think about the pattern of the fabric. Not all fabric patterns are complimentary for everyone’s body build. For example, I generally do not recommend large plaids for big men. However, I like stripe patterns for my tall customers.

When is it the Best Time to Order Custom Suits?

In order to have the best cloth selection I recommend ordering around the first of September for your fall clothing and the first of February for Spring. As each season progresses cloth selections are reduced due to orders being processed.

How Much Should I Pay for a Custom Suit?

Similar to most things, you pay for what you get! Other words, the quality of the fabric plus the tailor’s skill and the amount of hand work should determine the cost. For example, when you purchase a quality piece of furniture there are two primary aspects that dictate the cost of the product. The quality of the raw goods (The actual wood in furniture, ieÉ fabric in a suit.) and the skill of the craftsman producing the product. Made to measure or custom suits can range from approximately $650.00 to $5,000.00 or more.
